For decades (and to this day) swimming pool pump equipment manufacturers have powered their pool pump products with conventional electric motors known as Open Drip Proof motors (ODP).
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) characterizes ODP motors as motors that allow air to circulate around the windings of the motor but prevents liquid from directly entering the motor from 15 degrees off the vertical. NEMA recommends ODP motors be used for "indoor applications in relatively clean, dry locations".

NEMO Electric Motors, by design, are known as Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC). TEFC motors have a closed chamber within which the motor operates. The motor has an external fan which blows air over a ribbed frame designed to increase surface area for cooling purposes. TEFC motors are completely enclosed, protected from the outside environment, including dust, insects, airborne contaminants, and weather disturbances such as wind-driven rain. TEFC motors are recommended for outdoor or wet locations.
Due to the clean internal operating environment in which NEMO TEFC motors operate, it is common for pool owners to realize increased efficiencies in power consumption, quiet operation, motor and bearing life.
